A.S.Balasooriya's Contribution To Peace Education

The case study narrated by the author of Learning the Way of Peace :UNESCO Teachers Guide to Peace Education (2001) is a refection into how he developed insight into peace education from his field experience in conducting peace education workshops for school students. for the last 24 years in Sri Lanka. The objective he has in mind in the study is to share his learning with the educators interested in developing peace education. Using the narrative method he describes how he was impelled to work to chage the culture of violence he witnessed during the insurgencies 1971, 1982, 1987 in Sri Lanka. He started his work by appealing adolescent students to abstain from three evils. namely from smoking, taking liquor and involving in violent acts. Later he tried to bring up young students’ leadership skills to create a good society. He presents the curricula he used in different periods of his work. Finally he shares with the reader the insights gained through his experience and their implication to education. He hopes that his sharing will broaden the present scope and the methodology of peace education. . Methodology: Reflective self narration of the writer’s field experience by way of sharing with the interested educators Expected outcomes: Contributing to furthering of the insight, scope and the methodology of peace education Implications of the study: The insights shared at the last part of the as conclusions can be applied to facilitate the teaching and learning of peace. Discussion: What Is The Purpose Of Living?

Questioner I would like to ask you: What is the purpose of life? Is there a purpose at all? Or it is a wrong question? Balasooriya: It is a time old question. Isn’t it? How do I know whether there is a purpose? Q: At times one feels a desperate sense of purposelessness in life. It is form of suffering. B: When do you feel it? Q: For instance when the whole day is spent doing nothing, achieving nothing. B: Achieving is always according to a purpose. Your achievement is not my achievement. This means that the purpose is a mind construct according to one’s desires, expectations. Q: Do you mean that there is no purpose of life? B: Let’s be patient. Life is two dimensional and therefore we have two lives to live. One is the Life with which we are born, the Original life.
